Welcome to 2011!

Winter will end and the boating season will be here before you know it.  It seems early to be saying
“Welcome to the 2011 Boating Season” but the warm weather will arrive and all this snow will
disappear. We do want to welcome you all back and send a greeting to our newest patrons.
This newsletter serves to remind all our customers of what is available and what privileges they have
as customers.

Once again we had the opportunity of the greatest pleasures of the season and that was the laying
the wreaths from Maine in Arlington National Cemetery. What an honor that was!  How beautiful it was
to see the green wreaths with red bows on those glistening white stones.  I never cease to be amazed
at what a great event that is. More information on this project will be found further in this newsletter.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2011 BOATING SEASON
It is that time of year again to begin preparing for this coming boating season. It always seems so early
but if it wasn’t for all the calls we receive on cold, and snowy days, I would never get this letter written.
As with every year, we need to know how many of you are planning to return to the Marina. We do
have a waiting list and these people are very anxious to receive a call from us saying they have a
mooring for the summer.  So plans can be finalized for 2011 mooring assignments, we would greatly
appreciate receiving your Mooring Application by FEBRUARY 20, 2011. Mooring applications have
been sent out to previous patrons and are also now available on our website: www.paulsmarina.com
under the Customer pages.

***If you are not returning for any reason, PLEASE call 207-582-2579 immediately and let us know. We
do not want to give your mooring away if you are planning to return.

REQUIRED READING:
HAVING A MOORING ON CASCO BAY IS A PRIVILEGE THAT REQUIRES COMPLIANCE
STANDARDS.  THE SIGNING OF THE MOORING DOCUMENT IS YOUR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF
AND INDICATION THAT YOU ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH ALL THESE STANDARDS.

Make sure the length of your craft is correct as well as the combination number or location of any keys
kept on board your craft. E-mail addresses and telephone numbers are often different from one
season to another. PLEASE make sure all of these are correct and updated.

Please note that we have tried to make the payment schedule as easy as possible for all. There
always seems to be some confusion as to what to check off.  Every year we do come closer to making
it simple and user friendly.

JUDY’S GENERAL STORE & GIFT SHOP

Several people I have spoken to recently are already salivating for our sandwiches.  I believe we still
hold the record for the most chicken salad wraps sold in one season! We are trying to decide on a
new specialty sandwich for this summer.  I can’t ask John for help as his would be a sardine or bologna
sandwich.  But we are open to suggestions.

What kind of
Penny Candy will we be carrying this summer?  Some of the old favorites, of course!
However, it will soon be time for me to make a trip to the SMILIE CANDY STORE.  What fun that is and
remember the saying,”…as happy as a kid in a candy store!”  Well, I am and I look forward every year
to that outing.  As usual, I have many volunteers to go with me.  Remember, we have the biggest
selection of penny candy anywhere, with some
truly some for 1 cent.

Speaking of candy, we were able to have the absolutely best chocolate bonbons for
Mother’s Day.
MONICA’S Chocolates made right here in Lubec, Maine.  I am planning to place a large order for
that special day. Check out her website at
www.monicaschocolates.com

I will soon be in touch with our TEE shirt person and as always; a few new and fun shirts are in the
plans for this summer.  The
If Ever You Slept on an Island tee is already to put on the shelf.  The
Mariner’s shirt was a big hit last summer and we will be having more of those. Mere Point caps as
well as
Birch Island caps with their new logo went very well and we are planning for more of those.
Be sure to check us out early.  The
Love, Peace and Lobstah, tied dyed shirts arrived after the
season so they are all ready for the shelf.

Handmade jewelry can always be found in the shop and this year we have several artisans making
jewelry and bracelets with kids and young adults in mind.  I happened to have seen some of Butch’s
new ones for this summer and there are some great colors. Remember, there is more out there then
white rope sailor’s bracelets! Sue Loeb’s peace beads were very popular last year and we hope that
she is busy getting some of those ready as well.

We have found that
Gift Certificates were a very popular gift.   Keep this in mind when planning for
Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, a birthday etc.  They are good in all “departments” at the Marina and
do not have to be used all at one time.  They are available in any amount.

WORK ORDERS & SPRING PREP
We are beginning to plan our work schedules for our employees for this spring.  We are using your
contracts from last fall. You stated what you wished done to prepare your boat for spring launching.
You must inform us if there are any changes to that work order.

If you are planning to do your own work on your boat you can purchase your paint, wax, cleaner and
other cleaning and painting supplies from us.

Starting in April, we have FREE DELIVERY to the marina twice a week for marine products ordered
through HAMILTON MARINE.

BOTTOM PAINT
For years we have recommended the use of good quality bottom paint (Unepoxy Plus) to be used if
our customers wanted their boat bottom to be clean as well as power washed upon hauling.  This was
the best paint available to this point in time.
However, with all the regulations from the EPA and
DEP, we now have available a copper free antifouling paint (epaint).  With the use of this
paint, we will be able to continue to power wash boats in the fall without a huge investment
in a new wash down system.  It is compatible over popular antifoulants.
 Please read the
attached flyer on epaint.  This is the paint we need to use and will have available in the store.
Please keep us in mind when purchasing your bottom paint this spring!

BOAT REGISTRATIONS
We will no longer offer the boating registration service for people with a Brunswick and Harpswell
registration as it can now be done on-line by going to
https://www5.informe.org/online/boat/

I know this works!

CAR ALARMS
Nothing disrupts the peace and beauty of being at the water’s edge like a loud and unstoppable car
alarm. As a courtesy to all, PLEASE remember to deactivate them when going out on the bay.
This will be greatly appreciated by your fellow boaters, marina staff and the surrounding
neighborhood. Thank you!

EMPLOYMENT
Any student looking for summer employment should contact us immediately as there are only a few job
openings.  A letter or email asking for an application form, stating why they would like to work at the
Marina and what they can contribute to the crew is necessary. A copy of their latest report card and
birth certificate will need to accompany their application.  As we pride ourselves on our
Employees, we must start the hiring process very early in the year.  The scheduling of all the crew is
always an involved process. We have already received several applications.

GASOLINE
The use of premixed gasoline and additive last summer seems to have worked very well.  We are
planning to do the exact same thing this summer.  We are hoping that the price of gasoline doesn't
increase too much more.  However, we Mainers always manage to enjoy our boats.

WATER
The use of water at Paul’s has always been a privilege extended to our customers.  All patrons know
that the water is shared with the Marina house.  They also know to be most conservative with its use.
We do not say you cannot use it to wash your craft but we prefer that you use it mainly as a rinse.
This way there is plenty for water tanks as well as the house use.  Thank you for conserving.

2011 FUND RAISER
As mentioned earlier, this is going to be the 20th year that the little company in Harrington, Maine will
be making and placing wreaths on the tomb stones at Arlington National Cemetery.  Because of this
big anniversary, they have been given permission to place a wreath on every tombstone on Dec 10,
2011.  They are planning on placing 300,000 wreaths in Arlington alone as well as some in every state
in the nation and 24 cemeteries on foreign soil.  This is an undertaking of gigantic proportions.  They
need help to make this possible.  Being a Military family we take this to heart.  Several customers have
put together a beautiful quilt to be used as the Marina fund raiser this summer.  Check out the photo.
As you can tell, it is not done yet. Mother’s day is the deadline.  Raffle tickets will be sold all summer.
Please help us make this a success.  To check out more about this wonderful   project you can go on
line at
www.wreathsacrossAmerica.com.  It is an excellent website.
